The older I’ve gotten, the more I understand why my parents never liked to be bothered on Sundays. First let me make it clear that resets are not reserved for Sundays. Reset every day of the week if you have to until you feel focused and centered. I read on a Yogi Tea tag this morning “balance of the head and heart yields strength of character,” and I felt that. I reset whenever I feel like my mind is in a fog, and that’s often some weeks. Here’s a few things that I do to help me realign to my week’s purpose and my overall intentions.
5 Reset Must- Dos
1. Grocery shop
Some weeks my stomach needs a reset more than my mind. My gut health is so connected to my mental health, but ya girl likes to EAT. These last few weeks, I’ve just been living. Eating what I please, always in moderation, but just following my cravings, devouring so many different cuisines, and drinking a lot of lattes. Above is cafe Sunday to Sunday, where I got a delicious oat latte before grocery shopping.
As the summer closes out, it’s definitely time to get a little more disciplined and remember: there’s food at home. For the upcoming week, I decided I get to buy coffee TWICE and food ONCE (MAYBE). Every other day, it’s eggs, ground turkey, rice, and salad. Recipes coming soon? Every time I buy groceries, I feel like it’s a new opportunity to be organized and diligent about my eating habits. Making a light meal plan (with flexibility) and including that in your affirmations and plans for the upcoming week is so helpful.
Also, most grocery stores have flowers. Trader Joe’s has such an affordable selection of flowers, so I got myself some pretty white roses.
2. Closet clean out
This one is especially needed now as we transition from summer to autumn. I realized that summer hits, and I really do a Shein order a month… Like who needs that much clothes? My relationship to consumerism is something that I’ve been working on, and I realized that letting go of things that you know you don’t need or won’t use again can reset your intentions and your overall vibe. Did this shirt serve the look I wanted? Does it really speak to the style I want to grow into or give off? When was the last time I wore this? Is this in my constant rotation? Reset the things that you own.
3. Skin care
I love that skincare and body care is so connected to what we consider “self care.” I think that there was a time where these meant the same thing and we kind of lost the point to it. However, I always use this time to really inspect my skin, look in the mirror, call myself beautiful, and remind myself that healing and recovery takes time. I suffer from hyper pigmentation and hormonal acne. I think suffer is a little dramatic (my fault, I’m a Gemini), but seriously. I’ve been rebuilding my skin barrier for over a year.
Skin care for me is a mental practice of patience and gratitude. Those principals are what resets me for the week, and gives me the peace of mind to go into the week motivated and happy for what’s to come. Plus, skin care is just fun. This clay mask from Origins is effective, yet not to drying. Below is my skin care routine.
Skin care routine:
- Gently wash the skin with the Youth to the People Superfood Cleanser (using the 60 second method) and pat dry with a paper towel.
- Apply Origins Retexturizing Mask with Rose Clay for 10 minutes and then wash that off with warm water.
- Moisturize with the belief the true cream aqua bomb (THE ONLY MOISTURIZER TO NEVER BREAK ME OUT).
- Lock that in with the Youth to the People Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Oil
- And then of course: the Laneige lip mask.
4. Brain Dump
There’s so many different ways to do this. I personally love how the Bliss Bean does her weekly organization. She has a master list of all “aspect of her life” so I’ll make a list that sounds like: health, food, content making, nyc exploration, fitness, law school (currently applying), finances, reading, networking, home chores, family, friends, hair care, work. For each aspect, I’ll make a list of to do list items or whatever comes to mind. From that brain dump, I’ll organize what is my priority for this week and what can perhaps be tabled for later. The more focused the list, the more productive the week.
5. Plan your fits
Working from home is a privilege, and something to be grateful for. Yet, sometimes I try to make an effort to make it to the office or work from a coffee shop to keep my routine fresh and my mind alive. I get cabin fever real quick. I’ll take some time to plan my schedule including where I’m working on what day, how many meetings each day has, what time I’m working out each day, and that way I plan for the most part which day gets what outfits, and if I’m making content that day. Keeps me from stressing each morning on what to wear and lets me know ahead of time which days I can be comfy.
Make It Work For You
At the end of my Sunday Reset, I take some time to journal, which is normally a free write reflection or paragraphs on gratitude. I ended up treating myself to sushi after an amazing productive day of getting shit done and calling my self beautiful. I lit a candle, made some lemon ginger tea to cancel out those calories (full proof Dominican method, clearly), and got into bed with a Aaliyah’sFace vlog to watch.
Remember always that these are guiding points and not a manifesto. What works for me may work for you or be absolute crap. That is up to you to experiment with. Having a system is all about trial and error, and I don’t think I perfected this reset routine until a month ago when I settled in to my new adulthood flow. That damn near took me 7 months. I moved out my mom’s house in January, and finally feel like a functioning adult in September. That’s 9 months…
Take your time. Rushing is a false perception of what time really is.
